Olavo de Carvalho (1947–2022) was a writer, essayist, and philosophy teacher, author of O Jardim das Aflições and O Imbecil Coletivo. Based in the United States from 2005 onward, he became an intellectual reference for a generation of Brazil's right wing through his Online Philosophy Course. His reading lists were a central part of the method: more than a hundred titles recommended in the course's first classes, from Aristotle and Saint Augustine to Dostoevsky, Eric Voegelin, and René Girard — a program of classical education in the strict sense.
