Stones from the River

Set in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, this novel follows Trudi, a dwarf woman who observes the turbulent political events of her time from a unique and marginalized perspective. As Nazism rises, Trudi collects stories and secrets from her community, becoming a living repository of human memory and silent resistance.

Ursula Hegi constructs an intimate and visceral portrait of how ordinary people live in extraordinary, and often dark, times. The narrative is a tribute to dignity, compassion and the strength found at the margins.
